Playing golf is not easy at it may seems and for you to enjoy your next play on the best golf course in the Philippines, here are 10 valuable tips you may want to consider.
First Tip: Take a deadly aim
Watch your feet, knees, hips, shoulders and club face. Check your alignment every practice session for the rest of your life. This is the first fundamental you need to master and do perfectly without ease.
Second Tip: Create a solid stance
Develop a stance that is wide, stable, balance and solid. Build your golf swing from the ground up. Once you are normally doing a perfect stance, everything will fall into place.
Third Tip: Develop a perfect posture
Mind your posture every time. Right and proper posture will reduce injury and will make the most of your shot. Focus on great posture by tilting at your hips and not at your waist.
Fourth Tip: Be friends with your grip
Always practice holding the club in the correct position even when you are not playing golf. Bring your club at home and every time you walk past it hold it for 30 seconds and soon your hands will be married to the club correctly. This will make your hands and club best of friends.
Fifth Tip: Start your down swing with your hips
Not every down swing fault is due to starting it with the upper body rather than “bumping the hips”. Just imagine throwing a stone or a baseball and how the lower body starts the movement with the upper body following. That is the correct flow of force, from the lower body to upper body.
Sixth Tip: Make every sessions count
Learn your craft on driving range before you head for the best golf course. Each range session should include 50 balls at least and should last for about 30 minutes with two practice swings for every ball. In short, practice with purpose set in mind. Practice makes perfect right?
Seventh Tip: Use plenty of loft
Practice with a short, lofted club encourages and develops better posture and cleaner ball striking. You will gain confidence in seeing a nice high ball flight. Too little or short loft encourages new golfers to use a destructive scooping action to get the ball upwards. This may lead to injury and we want to prevent it.
Eight Tip: Leave the driver in the bag
Start your practice sessions with your pitching wedge and move through you bag of clubs mastering each one as you go through. Avoid using a linger and more difficult club until you are consistently and confidently hitting the shorter ones. Many golfers would be better to avoid the driver for at least the first 18 months of playing. Make sure to properly master each and every club before moving to the next.
Ninth Tip: Work on a Par 3 Course
Par 3 courses are great courses to develop your understanding about the game and your course management skills. You’ll spend less time looking for golf balls and you’ll begin to hone those all-important short-game skills.
Tenth Tip: Review fundamentals at least once a month
Always take time to review the basics and fundamentals of golf at least once a month. Try to read golf magazines, watch golf videos and tutorials, watch games live or on TV. If you will not be careful, you may tend to fall into the trap of chasing learning many different techniques without mastering one first. Eventually you will end up with a disjointed golf swing and a head full of conflicting thoughts. Let’s get back to the basics for basics are the building blocks of advance techniques.
Additional Valuable Tips
- Talking or using your cellphone is discouraged and considered rude. Make sure your phone is either off or on silent while playing.
- Don’t walk in another player’s line while putting
- Respect your fellow players. Never talk while they are making a shot or comment on their stroke or play.
- Before taking a shot, look around, and make sure that there is nothing you could hit, like golf bags, trees and people.
- Focus on your putting. Using practice green, which is free at most golf courses, is an easy way to develop you skills.
- Stretch before playing or practicing. All athletes, even professionals do stretch first before hitting the ground. A full day of golf can be a great strain on your back.
- If you are planning to take lessons, inquire whether the pro has rental clubs you can borrow for the first few lessons. It makes sense to find out if you like golf and get the professional’s input before investing any money in clubs.
